Go back

Was it The Game of Life? Sorry!? Trouble? Chutes & Ladders? Somebody taught us it was burdensome to go back to the beginning.  But if you’ve lost your way, quite often that’s exactly where you need to go.  It’s not a demotion. It’s not a set back.  If you go back on purpose you could very well be learning to live again. Jesus tells the church at Ephesus to go back to what they used to do at first……

Let’s commence

I LOVE COMMENCEMENT SPEECHES.

Said no one ever.

You know how they can be.  Cliches abound.  Leftover fortune cookie one liners. Enthusiasm overkill. Extra cheese. Fake applause.  Repeat.

But we must keep having commencement speeches because you never know when one like this will come along.

The line I can’t stop thinking about:

The measure of our compassion lies not in our service of those in the margins but only in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship with them.

And since you probably just read through those words and didn’t pay close enough attention, let me repeat them:

The measure of our compassion lies not in our service of those in the margins but only in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship with them.

To be fair, this wasn’t the commencement speech.  But it was graduation.  People were commencing.

It’s easy to check box community service; you can tell by how easy it is to get it over with.  It’s something a lot holier to see someone else with Godly eyes and care, so much so that you see your lives connected.  So, get to commencing.

Stay blessed…john

“The church is a business.” How many times have I heard that?! Of course, when you’re dealing with hundreds of people, at times the church should embrace business-like modes of action.  But I’ve spent my ministry learning that church cannot be thought of as a business. Business has a bottom line.  You could say that the church has one, too.  For a business, that bottom line is profit.  For the church, one could make the…..

Are you normal?

Do you consider yourself normal? If you’re like most normal people, you’ll normally say you’re not. C’mon, it’s fun telling people you’re not normal, you little jokester.  Who wants to be normal? We want to be above normal, post normal or even para normal. Actually, normal isn’t a bad thing–as long as the normal is a good normal and not a bad normal. Now I’ve spelled the word normal so much it looks wrong and…..

The Chopsticks Story

You might be reading this at work. If so, unless your employer regularly encourages you to wander to places that have nothing to do with your day’s productivity, it’s safe for me to say that you aren’t always a stickler for rules, are you? Even so, I like to bring up rules occasionally.  Specifically, every so often, I host a sermon series that relates the greatest commandment (a holy rule?) Jesus gave to John Wesley’s…..
